This is a really great article, and my cross-border car buying experience has given me a couple of other tips AMA members might find usefull.
Since the import duty does not apply to North American manufactured vehicles, greater savings can often be found on them. To determine where a vehicle was manufactured do not look at the name plate, but rather the VIN number. The first digit of the VIN number tells you the country of manufacture. If the first digit is a 1, 4 or 5, the vehcile was manufactured in the U.S.; if it is a 2, the vehicle was manufactured in Canada; a 3 means it was made in Mexico. To contrast, as an example, if the first digit is a "J" the vehicle was manufactured in Japan.
And shoppers should be diligent: they might be surprised to learn, for example, that some Camrys are imported from Japan, but some Camrys (Hybrids) are American made. A 2011 or 2012 BMW X3 is made in the USA, but 2010 and earlier in Germany.
Often if a vehicle was manufactured in North America, there will be fewer, if any, modifications necessary as the vehicle will typically roll off the assembly line meeting the Canadian specifications.
Finally, with respect to Warranty issues, several sources on the web disclose which manufacturers will honor their warranty in Canada on American purchased vehicles. But, failing that, aftermarket warranties are available from, among other places, the AMA.

Over the last 6 years (or so) I have purchased and imported three vehicles from the U.S.A. In my experience, as the Canadian dollar gets stronger versus the U.S. Dollar, the car deals get better the further south of the 49th you go. The deal will be better in, say, Salt Lake City or Denver, than in Seattle or Minot. If you're prepared to go as far as, for example, Phoenix, you might be able to find a really great deal.

I imported a 2008 Mazda MX5 PRHT in April, 2008; purchasing the vehicle in Dallas. The vehicle only had 1500 miles on it. After paying all fees and duties the total cost to me for that next to new car was $32,000. At that time a new 2008 was selling in Canada for $42,000. I was going to sell the car for profit but fell in love with it driving it back home to Canada so I still drive it today.

The main point missing from this article is that it is easier to negotiate a lower price in the US than in Canada, especially if there is more than one dealer in town. On a BMW M3, probably not, but on a Honda Civic, you've got more of a chance, so in fact it can work out better to buy a car in the US even then.
Also Montana has no sales tax, so although prices might be a bit higher there, tough to beat the overall price.
Another point is that price is not the only reason to buy a car in the US - there may be some US-only feature the car has, or it might be easier to sell the car in the US later on so it makes more sense to buy a US-spec vehicle.
