Oh boy, there I went again. Like the author, I'm an (ex-)mountaineer. A lot of my old climbing buddies were also cavers but the idea always made me shrink. I was always at ease on hard climbing routes but I could never face a 'real' cave.
I used to rationalise it as 'If I ever got really stuck on a mountain, at least I had the choice/chance of ending things by un-roping and stepping off. But in a cave I wouldn't have that final choice.' Always in my mind was the fate of a young British caver who died in 1963 while great efforts by many other cavers were being made to rescue him. His body was never recovered and that part of the cave system was sealed with concrete.
So I admire the author for being able to overcome his/her initial doubts; I could feel my stomach constricting throughout the piece.
Ironic endpiece: For most of my working life I was a deep-seam coalminer, often in seams less than one metre high. That hardly ever bothered me but the idea of caving still makes me cringe. Strange creatures, aren't we?

Indeed, we humans are strange creatures. When we sent the author on this assignment, we had no idea she had this fear. Glad you enjoyed reading the article.
