June 2010

A century is more than enough time to exonerate Reverend R. Murray Webb-Peploe and carpenter Charlie Schack for the architectural curiosity they bestowed upon the good Anglicans of Millarville in 1896.

Family friends of ours are descendants of Norman Willans a pioneer in the in the Millarville area. We are told that the logs for the church were felled on Norman Willans land. Contrary to the story line we have always understood that the builder Mr. Schack not Rev. Webb-Peploe was the fellow who suggested the vertical log construction and those on the board of the church were loath to pay him for this unorthodox log construction style until the church proved to be sturdy. As a sidebar many very large wooden churches in Scandinavia have stood for centuries using similar vertical "stavekirk" designs. Also we note that the photo image of the church has been flipped apparently for layout and style reasons as anyone familiar with the place will probably point out.

I'm not super familiar with that area , but it looks to me like the clsseot location listed on the chart is Farmington, with a date of May 1. If you tend to have similar weather to Farmington, I would use that date. You're right on the edge of the two groups. If it is a mild winter/spring and you are excited, I would follow the yellow schedule. If it is a cold winter-spring and you are more relaxed, I would use the green schedule.
