November 2009

Students from Briar Hill Elementary School started the “Idling Gets You Nowhere” campaign in 2007 to encourage parents to turn off their vehicles while waiting outside the school. The students patrolled entrances with their clipboards, tracking the number of idling vehicles. They put up notices on parking signs, in the school newsletter and at an open house. By the next school year, the students were seeing results.

Hats off Westworld for reminding some of us who think of ourselves as "socially experienced and environmentally cognizant" that it takes the youngest among us to remind us of the potential damage we are doing to our fragile atmosphere, and what simple, small measures are available to us in order to reverse some of the harm done in a big way. During a camping trip this past summer to Jasper while waiting at a train crossing, a sign located near the crossing reminded us to shut off our engine, it just felt good to know that we were doing our small part. For the rest of the trip our kids were there to remind us to reduce our idling when we had to wait for traffic or warming up the truck to fire up the A/C. I can’t help but think that the largest petroleum storage facilities on the planet are right under our residential noses, our gas tanks. (Do the math, its huge) There is no way that idle times can be completely eliminated, but they can surely be greatly reduced by the use of smart technology in our vehicles. If these advances in technology can tell us where the next drive thru is located by the use of GPS navigation surely they can be programmed to shut themselves off after 5 minutes of useless idling, perhaps if politicians are willing to bail out financially strapped auto makers, they could force some environmental accountability from them in exchange. We may all win in the end. Great article, keep up the good work. Chuck Renkas – Strathmore, Alberta.
